First sent to Nova Scotia in 1796, they are later transported to Sierra Leone in 1800, leaving her to confront the grief of separation and the uncertainty of their fate. Then I began to travel. Each journey brought new landscapes, histories and encounters into view, unsettling my original assumptions and prompting questions I had not thought to ask. Gradually, the boundaries of the project began to dissolve. What started as an investigation of a specific moment in Jamaica’s colonial history grew into something much larger: an exploration of forced displacement, migration, memory and the interconnected histories of people uprooted, transported and scattered across the world.
