<image:caption>Nova Scotia, Sierra Leone and Australia, these are all places that Britain deported formerly enslaved Jamaican rebels to. How can I describe this through tropical colors? Britain and America are really getting rolling now with the deportation process, deporting, deporting, deporting people from both of their countries. It's the same old story and nothing new.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PROJECTS - From Tropical Light to Goya’s Shadows</image:title>
<image:caption>This painting depicts an imagined Maroon woman left behind after her husband and brother are deported by the British following the Maroon resistance in Jamaica. First sent to Nova Scotia in 1796, they are later transported to Sierra Leone in 1800, leaving her to confront the grief of separation and the uncertainty of their fate. What could it have been like to be dragged out of Africa, enslaved in Jamaica and then deported to Nova Scotia, Australia or Sierra Leone, places you neither knew nor had ties to?</image:caption>

<image:title>PROJECTS - Influences On New Work(s) - And so, the tones of the painting changed, as did the title. No longer a depiction of a lighthearted, sunny California hike, the composition relies on darker, opaque glazes to achieve the somber tones. These changes mean too, that the title changes from “Breathe It In” (the title of a handmade stencil/print that informs the painting) to its new title, “What We Breathe, Mountain Air.”</image:title>

      <image:title>PROJECTS - Influences On New Work(s)</image:title>
<image:caption>I had originally planned to include this guy in the oil painting above, but as the painting evolved, my ideas took a different direction and he didn't quite fit anymore. I set him aside, but he wasn't quite finished with me. I went on to make a series of linocuts based on his image, and it was through these prints that he eventually found his way into another oil painting, which is currently in progress. It’s interesting how an image can disappear from one work only to resurface somewhere else, transformed along the way. You never quite know what will end up where.</image:caption>

(These letters, about 73 of them, are addressed mostly to her banished sons (Filippo, Lorenzo, and Matteo) in exile. They are a chronicle of family life, business transactions, and Medicean Florentine politics.) The originals are housed in the Archivio di Stato di Firenze.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Map No.1, hand embroidery, prints, and botanical pigments on cloth, c. 2022, 36 × 58 inches. Above: A wall hanging from Beyond Morant Bay, tracing the routes taken by British soldiers and Maroons through the Jamaican landscape and the paths of destruction left in their wake. Hand embroidery, printed marks, and pigments drawn from botanical sources transform the textile into a layered map, where the physical acts of stitching, printing, and staining evoke the accumulation of history, the scars of colonial violence, and the enduring imprint of these events on the land.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PROJECTS - Over A Decade in the Making</image:title>
<image:caption>Some notes from my notebook, written when the project was still focused solely on the Morant Bay Rebellion and Massacre. Then I began to travel. Each journey brought new landscapes, histories and encounters into view, unsettling my original assumptions and prompting questions I had not thought to ask. Gradually, the boundaries of the project began to dissolve. What started as an investigation of a specific moment in Jamaica’s colonial history grew into something much larger: an exploration of forced displacement, migration, memory and the interconnected histories of people uprooted, transported and scattered across the world. The more I travelled, the further the project reached beyond Morant Bay.</image:caption>
